While attending Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Kentucky, he served as student body president and graduated as class salutatorian in 1985. His leadership skills were further refined during his tenure as Magoffin County Attorney from 1994 through 1999. In that role, he managed complex cases and developed a reputation as an effective prosecutor. His accomplishments included a 95 percent conviction rate in DUI cases and involvement in a landmark drug conviction.
